The research group ‘English Applied Linguistics’ was founded in the year 1995 by some members of the Department of English at the University of Málaga sharing some scholarly interest in English for Specific Purposes, from the synchronic description of specialized genres as a vehicle of communication to more theoretical approaches to the teaching of English as a foreign language. In the year 1997, the unit progressively developed a growing interest in English Historical Linguistics, Old and Middle English in particular, either synchronically and diachronically. This field of research eventually derived in the adoption of other side areas like Manuscript Studies, on the one hand, and Corpus Linguistics, on the other. Some members have also initiated an alternative line of research on Stylometry and Authorship Attribution, non-traditional approaches in particular.
